“We are being traumatized every day, but this really breaks my heart ”

BROWNSVILLE — December 17, 2018 —Last week a young girl died in the custody of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) around 24 hours after she had been detained with her father.  As news of this tragedy rings throughout the community, Rio Grande Valley residents are saddened to experience another reminder of what they knew all along: Border militarization causes death.

When we learned of the death of Jakelin Ameí Rosmery Caal, organizers were both shocked by the news, but recognized it as something sadly familiar.  Community organizer Rosa San Luis reflected, “This confirms what we have been fighting for, and what we have known all along: The only thing border militarization causes is more border deaths.  We are losing precious, valiant lives. There is no reason for this.  It must stop.”

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has a horrible track record of lack of oversight and accountability. This year a toddler died after contracting an infection she received while at an ICE detention facility, nineteen year old Claudia Patricia Gómez González was shot and killed in May while being apprehended by CBP and an indicted border patrol serial killer was quoted saying he murdered the women because he wanted to “clean up the streets.”

The lack of oversight and accountability by DHS is gruesome.  The agency not only has blood on its hands, it has some of the worst blood on its hands: that of children.

What is equally devastating is that this grotesque lack of oversight is happening on our tax dollars.  No matter your politics, this death is our responsibility. Jakelin Ameí Rosmery Caal died because of laws that our country enforced.  Her soul lies on our collective conscience.

Not one more dollar should be spent on DHS funding until a thorough investigation of this death occurs.  Congress is negotiating the Federal Budget for 2019 and Trump is demanding more money for this outlaw branch of government.  Act now.  Call your member of Congress at 1-844-USA-0234 or  1-844-332-6361.  Demand justice for Jakelin before another tragedy is weighed against our nation’s values.
